Contrary to their modern, docile nature, they were originally bred for the brutal sport of bull-baiting. After bull-baiting was outlawed in England in 1835, the breed faced near extinction. This pivotal shift transformed the Bulldog into the sweet-tempered family dog we know today. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1886.

English Bulldogs, despite their appearance, are exceptionally gentle, docile, and affectionate. They are calm, easygoing, loyal, and loving, forming strong bonds with their families and thriving on companionship. Their patience and good nature make them excellent with children and other pets. They are courageous but non-aggressive, typically even-tempered and friendly. While they can be stubborn, this often manifests charmingly, requiring patient training.
