Rottweilers are a powerful and athletic breed with significant exercise needs to maintain their physical health and mental well-being. They require regular and vigorous activity to prevent boredom, which can otherwise lead to destructive behaviors.
For an adult Rottweiler, it's recommended to provide at least one to two hours of dedicated exercise daily. This isn't just a leisurely stroll; it should include activities like:
- Brisk walks or jogs
- Active play sessions in a securely fenced yard
- Training exercises that engage their intelligent minds
- Participation in dog sports like obedience, agility, or Schutzhund.
Despite their powerful build, Rottweilers actually have relatively low-maintenance grooming needs for their coat. They possess a short coat, but it's important to remember it's a double-coat, meaning they have an undercoat that will shed throughout the year, with heavier shedding periods seasonally.
To manage this shedding and keep their coat healthy, proper brushing is important. A weekly brush with a rubber curry brush or a shedding blade is usually sufficient to remove loose hair and stimulate skin oils.
Beyond coat care, routine hygiene includes:
- Bathing: They do well with routine bathing every four to six weeks, or as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo.
- Nail Clipping: Being sure to clip their nails on a routine basis is crucial. Overgrown nails can cause discomfort, pain, and even affect their gait.
- Dental Care: Regular teeth cleaning is vital for preventing dental disease, which can lead to other health issues. It's suggested their teeth get cleaned a minimum of three times a week.
