The Golden Retriever is a large, cheerful gun dog known for its “soft mouth” and ability to retrieve game without damage. Originating in mid-19th century Scotland from a cross between water spaniels and existing retrievers, it was bred to excel at retrieving waterfowl from both land and water.
Golden Retrievers are characterized by a kind, friendly, confident, and eager-to-please temperament, making them excellent, active, and fun-loving family pets.
The Golden Retriever’s origins trace back to mid-19th century Scotland, United Kingdom. It’s believed they descended from the now-extinct Russian tracker dog. During that era, wildfowl hunting was a popular sport among the Scottish elite. Existing retriever breeds at the time were found inadequate for retrieving game from both land and water effectively. To address this, the best water spaniels available were crossed with existing retrievers, leading to the development of the Golden Retriever, a breed specifically designed for efficient game retrieval with its renowned “soft mouth.” This innovative breeding led to the Golden Retriever becoming a very well-liked and sought-after dog for generations.

The Golden Retriever is an active breed that requires a significant amount of exercise to maintain its physical and mental well-being and to prevent boredom, which can lead to destructiveness. On average, a Golden Retriever should be exercised for at least one hour, twice a day. While Golden Retrievers in working fields may require even more activity, this minimum provides the necessary outlet for their energy levels.
The Golden Retriever’s beautiful double coat requires regular baths and grooming to keep it healthy and minimize shedding. Due to their floppy ears, it’s particularly important to have their ears cleaned regularly to prevent infections. While consistent grooming helps manage loose hair, it’s worth noting that excessive shedding in a Golden Retriever can sometimes indicate an underlying health issue, warranting a check-up with a veterinarian.
A healthy male Golden Retriever weighs between 65 to 75 pounds while growing up to 23 to 24 inches tall. A female weighs between 55 to 65pounds and can grow up to 21.5 to 22.5 inches tall.
For Golden Retrievers, full physical maturity takes one to two years. Once this is attained, its bones become fully grown and can perform the same amount of physical exercise as an adult dog.
Golden Retrievers often smell bad because of its thick water-resistant coat. You can, however, maintain its cleanliness to control its bad odor.
There are several ways to keep this dog healthy few of which are high-quality food, providing it with plenty of clean and freshwater, developing a good feeding schedule, etc.
The required food for a Golden Retriever is dependent on its age, activity level, size and built. Vets recommend about 2 to 3 cups of high-quality dry food per day for two meals.
This dog is a sporting breed and therefore requires a whole lot of exercise when fully grown, high-intensity exercise is very beneficial to it. However, high-intensity exercise shouldn’t be forced on a Golden Retriever until about 18 months old to avoid damaging its growing joints.
The Golden Retriever can thrive well in hot climates; all it requires is a shaded and aerated area with lots of water. However, it should not be allowed to exercise too much in the heat.
A puppy Retriever should not be taken from its mother earlier than when it is 8 weeks old. This is because up until that age, it gets important socialization and learns important skills from its mother and siblings.
A Golden Retriever naturally wants to be with its family, if its family is indoor, you will find it right there with them.
The Golden Retriever is not one to bark a lot except in cases of boredom or mental stimulation.
