The English Bulldog has a rich and complex history, originating in England as early as the 13th century. Contrary to their modern, docile nature, they were originally bred for the brutal sport of bull-baiting. After bull-baiting was outlawed in England in 1835, the breed faced near extinction. However, dedicated fanciers began to breed them for companionship, focusing on their gentle qualities and distinctive appearance rather than aggression. This pivotal shift transformed the Bulldog into the sweet-tempered family dog we know today. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1886.
